The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds Character and care by Joan Palmer There are two varieties of Chihuahua, the Smooth-coated and Long-coated, the latter having long hair of soft texture, which is either flat or slightly wavy. At one time it was normal for Long-coated and smooth-coated to interbreed and both varieties would appear in the same in the same litter, but such interbreeding is no longer permitted. The first Chihuahua to be registered in the United States was “Midget” in 1904, and the breed went on to become enormously popular there. In Britain a Chihuahua was still a comparatively rare sight in the 1950’s, but now it draws large entries in show classes. The Chihuahua is an exceedingly intelligent dog, that is affectionate, possessive, and, makes a good watchdog in miniature. Despite being generally thought of as a lapdog, it can walk as far as most owners wish. Care must be taken on outings that it does not start a fight because it seems to imagine that it is enormous when confronted with other canines. The breed is inexpensive to keep, and both long-haireds and short-haireds are fairly easy to groom, requiring only daily combing and brushing with soft brush.
