The Chihuahua is the smallest dog in the world. Christopher Columbus himself acknowledges them in his letters to the King of Spain. The Chihuahua accounts suggest that the Spanish took a small amount of the little dogs with them back to Spain, where they were bred with other small breeds. The history of the Chihuahuas’ origin states that this is the only dog originated from North America and it is not usually found as a rescue dog. The name of the breed shows that the ancestors of this dog came from the state in Mexico with the same name, but the true breed origin is unknown. Very small dogs were popular among the Aztecs and the Toltec’s. Chihuahua’s have a long and distinguished history as a breed. Aztec drawings and terracotta show animals comparable to the contemporary day Chihuahua as being important members of the superior class. The Chihuahua is also pictured accompanying their masters to the grave. This dog originally came from the ancient Techichi breed of dogs that were known to the Toltec Civilization near Mexico City. This ancient breed of dog was much bigger and was known to be a mute dog. Chihuahuas’ are found in materials from the Pyramids of Cholula around the 1530s’ and in the ruins of Chichen Itza on the Yucatan Peninsula. The Chihuahuas’ are compared to the Chinese hairless dogs which came from across the Bering Strait. The breed is also highly protective of their owners and sternly loyal to only one or two owners. This may be why Chihuahuas’ make great dogs for security. Throughout the years of interbreeding the Chihuahua has gotten smaller in stature and is only one breed.
